Hailee Steinfeld’s portrayal of Mary in Sinners is stunning. From jaw-dropping line delivery and an on-screen vulnerability that belies a hopefulness even in the face of a somewhat jaded past, Steinfeld’s role in Sinners would normally have stolen the show.

Normally being the vampire victim that creates the biggest turmoil in a bloodsucker contagion film would be surprising, but with Steinfeld’s character it seems inevitable that she would be the catalyst for so much destruction. Inevitable and deliberate, a remarkable choice in casting.

A remarkable achievement in its own right, we expect great things from Sinners at the Academy Awards.

Naive victim/villain professing a dangerous infatuation and straddling two worlds, all to become the fulcrum that shifts the film from life narrative to horror story? We think so, yes.
